These optimizations are intended to not only help search engines understand the content of our pages better, but also to improve our users’ experience when visiting our sites. Simple steps such as fixing 404s and broken links, simplifying URL choice, and providing easier-to-understand titles and snippets for our pages can benefit both users and search engines. From the start of the project we also wanted to release the report card publicly so other companies and webmasters could learn from the report, which is filled with dozens of examples taken straight from our products’ pages. full article

“You used to be expected to type for yourself. But today people have come to expect a reasonable amount of help at even this task. Our phones now help us form correctly-spelled words, our browsers fill in long addresses after we’ve typed only a few characters, and search engines recommend searching for “Humphrey Bogart” after we’ve typed just “boga.”

But not all as-you-type search suggests are created equal. Careful observation seems to reveal three different approaches: completion, suggestion, and instant results. These approaches range in cognitive burden on the one hand, and utility on the other. We’ll look at several examples of each and consider when they should be used.” (Tyler Tate) full article

“Last week I attended a UIE Virtual Seminar called Leveraging Search & Discovery Patterns for Great Online Experiences, with Peter Morville & Mark Burrell. During his talk, Peter mentioned that navigation on web sites has swung back and forth over time between Browse based navigation and Search based navigation. So, for example, ye olden days, if you wanted to buy something at Staples, you were encouraged to browse the site and find what you wanted to buy. Later, search boxes began to pop up all over sites and visitors were encouraged to search more than browse. These days, Peter said, navigation is more of a mix between Search and Browse. I’m still trying to decide if I agree with this, but it got me thinking about related topics near and dear to my heart…” Full article
